Getting to Oravae Cottage

There are daily flights from Honiara to Gizo. Oravae is a scenic 20 minute boat ride from Gizo.

Amenities at Oravae Cottage

Tasty meals are planned and prepared on the island by your welcoming and wonderful hosts, Naomi and Patson, and delivered to the cottage at meal times. Please advise of any food allergies or special meal requirements in advance.

Soft drinks and beer can be ordered in advance of your stay and are payable on arrival.

Oravae Cottage is located on the beachfront of a private island. It is a true island retreat with limited communications to the outside world. A local SIM card needs to be purchased prior to arrival if required. 240 volt power is limited.

Other amenities include gas lighting, fridge and stove; cutlery and kitchen supplies; tea and coffee; linen and towels; traditional canoe and a selection of inflatables to float your day away.

Accommodation at Oravae Cottage

Oravae Cottage is an open-plan wooden bungalow built from local supplies. It has one bedroom with double bed, plus an additional four single beds in the spacious living area for up to 6 people. The cottage contains a kitchenette, an indoor shower and toilet, plus an additional outdoor shower and features an over-water verandah that leads right out over the beautiful blue lagoon, complete with hammocks and deck chairs.

To accommodate larger groups of up to 10 people, there are two additional cottages.

The Penthouse is an overwater bungalow adjacent to Oravae Cottage. It has a double bed, indoor toilet and outside shower, and a huge wooden deck perfectly positioned to catch the sea breezes across the lagoon. (Sleeps 2)

The Treehouse is nestled in the trees on stilts right on the water’s edge. It has one double bed and two wooden decks, the main deck having direct views to the impressive Kolombangara Volcano. Bathroom facilities are shared with the Cottage and Penthouse. (Sleeps 2)

The island is only ever booked exclusively for one party at a time.

Activities at Oravae Cottage

Swimming and Snorkelling
The waters around Oravae are perfect for snorkelling and swimming. There is plenty of marine life on the surrounding reefs to keep you entertained including giant clams, anemone fish and black tip reef sharks.

Scuba Diving
Scuba diving is organised with the local dive operator and can be booked for either 2 or 3 dives a day to different dive sites with a relaxed surface interval and picnic lunch on one of Gizo’s remote islands in between dives.

Surfing
Oravae Cottage can arrange surf transfers and surf guides to the three primary breaks around the Cottage which are 20 – 30 minutes boat transfer away.

Maximum of 6 surfers per trip.

Titiana: located in front of Titiana village. This break is a long, barrelling lefthander 2-4 foot on an average day, can get as big as 8 foot on bigger swells. Best surfed on higher tides.

Paelongge: a sweet all round wave with an easy take off. Paelongge is a magical right hander, great on bigger swells.

Patsons Reef: this is a deep submerged reef perfect for beginners and paddle boarders and a bit of an escape when the swell gets too big for the outer breaks.

Other activities from Oravae Cottage include canoeing in Oravae’s traditional wooden canoe, fishing and surfing. Tours can be arranged around Ghizo Island to visit the local villages and beaches and around other local islands, as well as jungle walks and hiking on Kolombangara Island.

Hiking
For fit and adventurous hikers, the majestic Kolombangara Island awaits! At 1,770 metres high, the volcanic island supports a beautiful and diverse ecosystem with approximately 80 rivers and streams flowing down its flanks. Beachcombing on the pristine beaches of Kolombangara is more relaxing and also fun!
